"How much will it cost me?" is the first question and the hardest one to answer honestly. We don't quote a single number on this site, and here's why: tuition differs by programme, the funds that Migri expects you to show change, and a figure from a Facebook group is probably last year's. What we can do is show you how to build your own.
Step 1: tuition, if there is any
Look at the programme page. Many English-taught bachelor's and master's programmes charge tuition to students from outside the EU/EEA. Then check whether the institution offers scholarships or waivers and how they're decided. You'll find a starting point on our scholarships page.
Step 2: living costs
For the residence permit, Migri sets a minimum monthly amount you must show. Treat it as a floor, not a target. Then look at rent in the city you're considering: student housing is much cheaper than private rentals, but it fills early, so ask about application dates as soon as you have an offer.
Step 3: the one-off costs people forget
- Residence permit application fee
- Flights, and your first few weeks before any income
- Rental deposit
- Student union membership
- Health insurance, if your permit requires it
- A proper winter jacket and boots
Step 4: add a cushion
Things always cost a bit more than the spreadsheet says. A cushion for the first months is far better than borrowing in a hurry.
Not sure how your numbers look? Bring them to a consultation and we'll go through them line by line. For the official requirements, see migri.fi and the institution's own fee page.
